The history of Sun Mountain Resort

Local businessperson John L. Phillips founded Sun Mountain Resort in 1973. Originally known as Sun Valley Ranch, the ski resort was sold in 1988 when its owner, Jim Burke, bought out the resort.

In 1994, the resort was renamed Sun Valley Resort and expanded with the construction of a large lodge, more than 200 guestrooms, and the expansion of the ski slopes. The new owners, the Sun Valley Corporation, were able to secure the property rights to the land surrounding the resort for future expansion.

By 1996, the resort had completed the construction of the Sun Valley Lodge, which included a new hotel, restaurant, spa, golf course, and more than 300 guestrooms. Sun Valley Resort is a premier ski resort and destination in the United States.

In 1997, Jim Burke was hit by a truck, leaving him with a serious brain injury. He later died from complications due to the injury. His wife, Ann Burke, took over the resort until she died in 2013. Ann’s son, John Burke, took over the resort and had been running the business since.
